What a day!  Emotions were running high and low during a roller coaster day for OU.

Yesterday afternoon, the OU women played their hearts out against hometown favorites SDSU.  Despite some tough defense, OU couldn't land enough baskets in the end and lost the game 61 - 54.  Zakiya, Malika and Sharise were all over the floor and Anna and Bethany came through with some beautiful three-pointers in the final stretch, but it wasn't meant to be.

The good news is, this team is very young and very talented.  Expect big things from this group next season!

In other good news, the Oakland University men's basketball team wasn't about to leave town without a repeat Summit League championship.  It was a grand effort by the Golden Grizzlies last night as they overtook conference rival ORU 90-76.  Reggie was on fire and Keith was able to get great looks inside.  The two combined for over 50 points for the Grizzlies!

After the game, the team was presented with the tournament trophy and Keith was named tournament MVP.  After the net-cutting, Keith even ended up with the majority of the net around his neck.  There was a great after party to celebrate the seasons of both teams and to gear up for the NCAA tournament!!

OU will host a Selection Sunday event on Sunday, March 14 at the O'rena.  See for more information in the next few days.

Men Triumph Over SDSU 110-90 Login to comment

The OU men bested the hometown boys of SDSU in tonight's semifinal game. It was an offensive showdown with a final score of 110-90.  The blue and gold clad crowd was overwhelmingly in favor of SDSU, but OU quieted them down with an aggressive offense and great hustle.

Drew Valentine had a fantastic game, and Reggie Hamilton wound in and out of the lane with multiple baskets.  Travis Bader's 3-point shot was on target and Larry Wright contributed in the clutch.  It was an exciting game to watch with multiple contributors!

Next up, the Golden Grizzlies will face the winner of ORU v. IUPUI at 8 p.m. CST.  It will be broadcast on ESPN2, so be sure to check it out.  Watch parties are being planned at the Buffalo Wild Wings in Rochester Hills (corner of Walton and Livernois) and Mt. Clemens, as well as Hockeytown in downtown Detroit.  Visit for more information.

Stay tuned and go Grizzlies!!

In a word: WOW.  The OU women's team outshined No. 1 seed Oral Roberts in semifinal play today at the Summit Tournament.  No. 4 OU came out with guns blazing and never looked back, posting a 96 - 61 victory over ORU.  The team played with a great energy and cohesion that the Golden Eagles just couldn't stop.  OU was hot everywhere!  We hit the 3 point ball and we broke the full court press.  We drove the lane and we made our free throws.

It was the most exciting game of the tournament thus far!!!  The women will play next against SDSU or IPFW in the championship game at 3 p.m. CST on Tuesday, March 8.  The game will be televised on ESPNU.  For those of you fans in the Detroit area, be sure to join one of two watch parties planned at Buffalo Wild WIngs in Rochester and Mt. Clemens.

Women Win Over SUU 65-58 Login to comment

It was deja vu for the Golden Grizzlies, as this time it was the women's team who triumphed over Southern Utah with a final score of 65 - 58.  Sharise Calhoun and Bethany Watterworth contributed some solid points toward the win, with Zakiya Minifee hustling on both sides of the court and Anna Patritto stepping in with great defense.  The Grizzlies had a few double digit leads, but SUU kept within striking distance for a majority of the game.  The OU ladies never lost sight of their goal and celebrated a great win!

They will face No. 1 Oral Roberts in the semifinals at noon CST on Monday, March 7.  This game will be televised on ESPN3.

Stay tuned and go Grizzlies!

The Sixth Man Login to comment

Sunday, March 06 2011 10:59:48 AM

Over the next few days, we'll all read a lot about the conference play - points, rebounds, assists, etc.  And while OU has some exceptional talent on that court, we also showed up with an additional asset - the sixth man.  Athletics Director Tracy Huth  talked about the sixth man being an important part of the game in last night's pep rally, and I couldn't agree more.

The sixth man is many things.  The roar of the crowd.  The cheer and dance team routines.  The pep band leading us all in the OU Fight Song.  The sixth man is that little bit of something extra to help carry the team to victory and let me tell you one thing:  OU's sixth man showed up!

When we took the court last night for the men's game, not only was the pep band playing the OU Fight Song, but the OU fans were on their feet and the cheer and dance teams led the players onto the court with all the spirit (and pom pons!) they could muster.  It was truly a sight to behold.

I'm sure you're thinking, well, that sounds nice and all, but really, doesn't every team do that for the conference?  Actually, no.  We are the only school that brought a pep band.  And while other schools sent their cheerleading squads, we one up-ed them with our dance team too.  We've got the Grizz, OU flags, pom pons, face paint and more!  And when you're so far from home and the comforts of our beloved O'rena, that can make all the difference in the world.

Our sixth man showed up to play!  We're ready to win!

Men Win Over SUU 82-66 Login to comment

Whoohoo!!  Our first victory of the 2011 Summit Tournament came at 8 p.m. tonight when the men's team bested Southern Utah with a final score of 82 - 66.  The score stayed close during the first half, with OU's lead sometimes just one basket.  (Made me a little uncomfortable at times, I have to admit!)  However, in the second half, we turned up the heat and ended up posting a solid win.  It was a great team win with multiple players showing their strengths - Keto, Reggie, Travis, Drew - everyone showed up to play!

Next up is the women's game at noon tomorrow, Sunday, March 6.  The men play again on Monday, March 7 at 6 p.m. in the semifinal round against the winner of IPFW vs. SDSU.

Stay tuned and go Grizzlies!
